Reflections from a Vintage Trailer Rally at Pismo Beach

There’s something magical about stepping back in time, especially when that time is parked in perfect rows under the coastal sun. From May 17 to May 18, 2025, the shores of Pismo Beach, California, played host to the annual Vintage Trailer Rally, and it was a sight to behold.

Trailers of every make and model—each more than 20 years old—lined the event grounds, gleaming in the sunlight. These trailers are beautifully restored and showcased in their original, vibrant color schemes. Matching tow vehicles from the same eras completed the retro charm, creating picture-perfect moments at every turn.

What made this rally more than just a nostalgic experience was the functionality still present in these timeless machines. Each trailer reflected the tried-and-true technology of its era—solutions that were often surprisingly innovative for their time. Today’s RV product designers frequently look to these vintage creations for inspiration, and it’s easy to see why. From Class B vans to modern travel trailers and luxury Class A motorhomes, the DNA of these classic designs lives on.

Our own resident designer came away particularly inspired. The colorful canopies, thoughtfully designed awnings, and creative shade solutions were not only eye-catching but also functional—something we always value at AirboardShop.com. Among the standout features were the unique entry stair solutions. The Pullman Step design, prominently featured on several vintage Argosy, Airstream, Silver Streak, and other polished aluminum trailers, proved to be a crowd favorite for both form and function.

For restoration enthusiasts, the rally offered more than just eye candy. Dozens of vendor tables featured vintage trailer parts—everything from chrome trim to original hardware—sold by friendly collectors and builders. It was a goldmine for anyone looking to finish up (or start) a restoration project.

After leisurely exploring the grounds and admiring over 250 vintage trailers, we headed back to our nearby state campground, hearts full and imaginations sparked. As we sat around the campfire, we reminisced about the heyday of the trailers we had just toured—each one a rolling time capsule of design and adventure.

If you’ve ever considered attending a vintage trailer rally—or even exhibiting your own classic camper—start planning for next year. Pismo Beach welcomes enthusiasts with open arms, and we can’t wait to be back.

See you down the road—and maybe under one of those classic striped awnings.
